What size skip bin do I need?

One bathroom fits a 3m, but we suggest a 4m. Book it as mixed and heavy. If only tiles and rubble come out, book concrete and brick, plus $100 for the tiles. A 3m is $560 and a 4m is $660.

A kitchen takes a 4m, mixed and heavy too. Doing the kitchen, a bathroom and the floors at once needs a 6m, at $860. Don't book any renovation as general waste. If the load has no tiles, hardwood, soil, concrete or rolls of carpet and underlay, a 4m light construction bin is $590.

A garage clear-out fits a 4m general waste bin. A shed and garden that have been filling up for years suit an 8m, $860 in general waste. It takes 1,600kg.

Set old paint, gas bottles and batteries aside first. None of our bins take them.

Most green waste jobs take a 4m or a 6m, at $400 and $555. A garden tidy-up fits a 2m green waste bin for $300, and a solid clean-up a 3m for $350. A big garden or acreage clean-up needs the 8m, at $705. Soil from a dug-out garden bed isn't green waste. Book it as clean fill, and some roots through it are fine.

Clearing one room fits a 2m, and one or two rooms a 3m. What's left after a house move fits a 4m. A whole house or a deceased estate takes a 6m, at $670 in general waste. A bigger house clear-out takes an 8m, which holds a third more. Mattresses go in for $70 each, booked before delivery.

The heavy waste types all have the same weight limits. A 2m takes 2,000kg, a 3m 3,000kg, a 4m 4,000kg and a 6m 6,000kg. Up to a 4m, clean fill or concrete and brick is $330 to $470. In a 6m, clean fill is $720 and concrete and brick $620.

Barrowing it in? The 4m and 6m come with a drop-down door. Dug soil takes up more room than it did in the ground. Not sure of the weight? Tell us the size of the hole.

Knocking down a wall or breaking up a slab? If it's only concrete and bricks, book concrete and brick. Once timber or rubbish is mixed through it, the load is mixed and heavy.

A hardwood deck or fence can only go in mixed and heavy. Cut long boards down so nothing sits above the rim. Re-roofing? A concrete tile roof usually needs two or three 6m concrete and brick bins. For any other roof, tell us what it's made of before you book.

Measure your pile in metres and multiply length by width by height. A pile 2m long, 1.5m wide and 1m high is 3 cubic metres, so it fits a 3m.

Go up one. People most often book too small a bin for a deceased estate, a garden clean-out or soil. On general waste, a 3m is $40 more than a 2m, but a second 2m is another $330.
